"Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo...
I do believe it. I do believe it's true." (Name that tune!)
Maybe it's my giddiness at the prospect of leaving town for the long weekend or the promise of lovely, cool weather. Or, because the last time I went to a zoo was over fifteen years ago as 4th grade field trip chaperone. (I still have nightmares about that day.) But, I am so psyched to visit Omaha's world famous Henry Doorly Zoo with only my husband in tow. I feel like a kid!

just for fun, go to Borsheim's in Regency. Owned by Berkshire Hathaway (aka Warren Buffett). Awesome jewelry store that is less la-di-dah than Tiffany's but just as spendy. Also, M's Pub and Vivace in the Old Market are first rate restaurants. And for pizza, try Zio's. Another local favorite, Lo Sole Mio for authentic Italian. (be prepared to wait and also split the entree because it will feed four.....) Enjoy your trip up north.
Kim, this is just the input I was needing. Thank you. I can use a couple more restaurant suggestions - hubs will want to try Upstream Brewery, on principle - because we'll be there for 5 meals, not including breakfast. I'm not really a fine jewelry kind of gal as I tend to lose stuff, so we'll probably pass on the spendy place, unless we have "Breakfast at Borsheim's"... !!
I've not been to the DT Upstream in a while but the one in far west Omaha is great, as is Lazlo's, a Lincoln-based brewpub that colonized Omaha. If you are into gardening, there are two very fine garden centers, but they do require a drive. Mulhall's is at about 120th and Maple, and Lanoha's is at about 180th and Center. Lahoha's in particular is spectacular. Both have a lot of interesting home decor items. West Omaha in particular reminds me of Olathe/OP. Omaha's Joslyn museum is also cool. It's free from 10-noon on Saturdays. Enjoy. Omaha is a nice town. I'm from Lincoln, though, and will be spending my Saturday cheering on the Cornhuskers.
Another friend suggested the Joslyn, so I believe that one will make the cut. As for your precious Cornhuskers, I am tempted to thank you for abandoning the conference but, to be honest, I will miss the 'sea of red' that invades my neighborhood every other fall. Thanks again for the tips.
